The Standard

The Standard

[H]

The Radically Clean & Hormone-Conscious Standard™ defines the unwavering purity, performance, and artistry across all Lab Atelier Brands.

After founder Joshua Máno Gilbertson received an autoimmune diagnosis, doctors advised him to abandon fragrance entirely. Teaming up with fashion and lifestyle designer Tess Richards, they realised millions facing health challenges, fertility journeys, or chemical exposure concerns were being forced to choose between well-being and their love of scent.

Told by the industry that a truly clean alternative was impossible, they set out to prove otherwise. Working with the heritage of Grasse perfumery in France, they developed a disciplined ingredient palette and rigorous company standard that refuses to compromise on safety or elegance.

It safeguards long-term health, all products ban carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, forever chemicals, and environmental pollutants—surpassing standard IFRA guidelines and aligning with the Breast Cancer UK Chemicals of Concern 2024/2025 list and 2026 list where specified. Real essential oils are paired with nature-identical and safe synthetics to deliver uncompromised safety, performance, and sustainability.

01

Breast Cancer UK Chemicals of Concern Framework

[ALL]

Both base formulation and fragrance oil adhere with the rigorous Breast Cancer UK Chemicals of Concern 2024/2025 List, and 2026 List where specified, thereby surpassing IFRA standards. This adherance is verified by our perfume houses and our manufacturers.

02

Fragrance Architecture

[ALL]

All scent formulations blend real essential oils with nature-identical and safe synthetics for balance and sustainability. We fully disclose all fragrance allergens on product labels and share full ingredient listings online or as requested for complete transparency.

03

Manufacturing & Integrity

[ALL]

Products are produced exclusively in certified facilities (ISO & NGV) from initial perfume oil blending to final packaging to guarantee safety, ethical standards, and performance without compromising sillage or efficacy.

04

Packaging

[ALL]

Bottle, dispensers, and closures are fully recyclable. All household bottles are made from recycled plastic, and strictly certified free of leaching bisphenols (BPA/BPS/BPF). All laundry and household labelling has been uniquely designed to be fully recycylable with the bottle without removal required.

05

Sulphate (Sulfate) Policy

[P | B | H]

Fine Fragrance [P] and leave-on Body Care [B] are strictly 100% sulphate-free. Sulphates (e.g., SLS/SLES) are permitted only where functional foaming is required (such as Laundry Detergents, Washing-Up Liquids, and Handwashes [H]) and are always balanced with soothing natural botanicals.

Harsh Household & Industrial Agents

Ammonia [H]

Why we ban: Strong respiratory, eye, and skin irritant; forms toxic chloramine gas if mixed with bleach.

Bleach & Chlorine [H]

Strictly ban inorganic elemental chlorine, hypochlorite bleach, and corrosive chlorinating agents in household cleaning [H]. Fully synthesised, stable organic aroma esters containing bound chloro-functional groups (e.g., Trichloromethyl Phenyl Carbinyl Acetate) are permitted in Fine Fragrance [P] → Why we ban: Corrosive chemical irritants that damage tissue and act as persistent environmental pollutants. → Why we allow in fragrance: Bound chloro-groups make organic esters chemically non-reactive, non-corrosive, and safe for personal care applications.

Cocamide DEA [B | H]

Why we ban: Diethanolamine derivative classified as a recognised carcinogen.

Phosphates [H]

Why we ban: Causes aquatic eutrophication, triggering toxic algal blooms and depleting marine oxygen.

Precision-Dosed Aromatic Isolates [ALL]

We distinguish between raw chemical hazard and real-world physiological risk. Regulated phenolic and methylated isolates (e.g., Methyl Isoeugenol) are governed through strict toxicological exposure science and micro-threshold capping—ensuring deep olfactory artistry without bioaccumulation, cell toxicity, or hormone disruption.

Sodium Dodecylbenzene Sulfonate [H]

Why we ban: Harsh surfactant known to cause severe skin irritation and aquatic toxicity.

Toxins, Solvents & Irritants

DMDM Hydantoin & Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservative [ALL]

Why we ban: No intentionally added formaldehyde or preservatives that continuously release formaldehyde over time, a known human carcinogen and potent allergen.

Vanillyl Butyl Ether [ALL]

Why we ban: A warming sensory agent capable of inducing severe neurosensory irritation and skin inflammation.

Volatile Solvents (e.g., Toluene, Benzene, Hexane) [ALL]

Heavy industrial solvents are banned. Short-chain volatile alcohols (e.g., Ethanol, Isopropyl Alcohol / Isopropanol) are permitted solely as necessary functional processing carriers, active solubilisers, or fragrance diluents at safe, non-irritating levels → Why we ban: Harsh industrial carrier solvents linked to skin sensitisation, neurological toxicity, and organ damage.

Endocrine / Hormone Disruptors & Carcinogens

Bisphenols (e.g., BPA, BPS, BPF) [ALL - Formulas & Packaging]

Why we ban: Endocrine disruptors that mimic oestrogen, interfere with hormone signalling, and promote cancer risk. Banned in both product liquids and primary container materials.

Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Lilial / BMHCA) [ALL]

Why we ban: Reprotoxic compound banned globally due to links to infertility, developmental harm, and allergenicity.

Chemical UV Filters (e.g., Oxybenzone / Benzophenone-3, Octinoxate, Homosalate, Octocrylene) [P | B]

Why we ban: Added to clear bottles to preserve liquid colour; acts as potent oestrogen mimics and bioaccumulative tissue toxins.

Parabens (e.g., Methyl-, Ethyl-, Propyl-, Butylparaben) [ALL]

Why we ban: Synthetic preservatives that mimic oestrogen, disrupt the endocrine system, and accumulate in breast tissue.

PFAS / Forever Chemicals (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) [ALL]

Why we ban: Non-degradable organofluorine compounds that bioaccumulate in human body tissues and breast milk, disrupting thyroid and reproductive hormones.

Phthalates (e.g., Diethyl Phthalate [DEP], Dibutyl Phthalate [DBP], Di(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate [DEHP]) [ALL]

Why we ban: Oestrogen-mimicking plasticisers and synthetic fixatives linked to reproductive toxicity and breast cancer.

Synthetic / Endocrine-Disrupting Benzoates [ALL]

Why we ban: Synthetic benzoate preservatives and added benzoate fixatives linked to hormone disruption and cell toxicity. Direct added Benzyl Benzoate and Benzyl Salicylate are restricted. (Note: Naturally occurring benzyl benzoate inherently present within pure essential oils like jasmine and ylang-ylang is permitted).

Synthetic Musks (Macrocyclic, Nitro, Polycyclic, and Spirocyclic Musks, e.g., Galaxolide, Ethylene Brassylate, Habanolide, Globanone, Cyclopentadecanolide, Musk C14, Musk Xylene) [ALL]

Why we ban: We exclude legacy synthetic musk materials—specifically macrocyclic, nitro, polycyclic, and spirocyclic compounds—because they act as persistent, bioaccumulative synthetic scent fixatives that interfere with hormone receptors and pose carcinogenic risks. Modern, readily biodegradable alicyclic ester musks (such as Helvetolide and Romandolide), as well as woody, amber, ambery-woody, cedar, sandalwood, and ambergris-type fragrance materials, are permitted as safe, non-bioaccumulative options; each material is assessed according to its chemical identity, environmental fate, intended olfactory function, and recognised fragrance-material classification.

Triclosan and Triclocarban [ALL]

Why we ban: Antimicrobial agents linked to endocrine disruption, thyroid interference, and environmental toxicity.

Environmental Pollutants & Processing Additives

Alkylphenols & Ethoxylates (APEs, e.g., Nonylphenol, Octylphenol, Undeceth-5) [ALL]

Why we ban: Surfactants and processing emulsifiers that break down into persistent environmental oestrogen mimics. Non-alkylphenol, readily biodegradable linear fatty alcohol ethoxylates (AEOs, e.g., C6–C12 ethoxylated alcohols) used as functional solubilisers or processing carriers are permitted as non-persistent alternatives.

Microbeads [B | H]

Why we ban: Non-biodegradable microplastics that pollute marine ecosystems and enter the human food chain.

Petrochemicals (direct use) [ALL]

Heavy crude oil mineral oils, petrolatum, and toxic industrial solvents are banned. High-purity functional glycols and glycol ethers (e.g., Propane-1,2-diol, DPM) are permitted solely as necessary fragrance diluents, carriers, or solubilisers at safe, non-irritating levels → Why we ban: Crude oil derivatives that dry out skin, clog pores, and lack sustainability.

Silicones [ALL]

Non-biodegradable cyclic siloxanes and legacy silicone polymers are banned. Non-cyclic, highly modified alkyl-terminated silicone polymers (e.g., Alkyl-terminated Polydimethylsiloxane) are permitted solely as functional manufacturing processing aids and anti-foaming agents in Laundry Care [H] → Why we ban: Non-biodegradable polymers that accumulate in waterways and interfere with endocrine signalling.

Synthetic Dyes [ALL but Candles exempt]

Why we ban: Non-functional aesthetic colorants that can release carcinogenic aromatic amines or cause allergies. (Permitted only in clean-burning candles using safe dye options for the end use).
